The ETA has participated in the Malta Maritime Summit which took place in Valleta from the 3rd to the 6th of October. This Summit was primarily aimed at giving industry a voice in the maritime sector primarily in view of Malta’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU next January; a Presidency whereby maritime affairs will be one of the key priorities.
The Summit intended to provide a unique opportunity to stakeholders in the maritime sector to meet with members of national governments and EU institutions representatives. The event was a perfect setting to discuss and analyse the EU’s and international maritime strategies and their impact on industry.
Our Anna Maria Darmanin, Secretary General of the ETA, was a speaker on the first day of the summit in the panel on “Human Resources and New Skills”. Her intervention highlighted the typical characteristics of crew in terms of demographics; how typically such crew is recruited and trained; the challenges related to human resources; and also the new skills crews are meant to be honing.
Other panels in this summit were related to key issues affecting the industry and which will be analysed in a future review of the EU legislation, such as: Digitalization, smart and environmentally friendly ships, development in ports, innovative energy, corporate governance, and internationalisation.
The Summit was an excellent opportunity for the ETA to highlight the specificities of the industry within the maritime sector. Among the participants, the Summit counted on the presence of the EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, her Head of Cabinet, Matej Zakonjšek and IMO´s Secretary General, Kitack Lim.
This high level event will be complemented during the Maltese EU Council presidency (first semester of 2017) with the Maritime Stakeholders Forum, which shall take place at the end of March 2017.
